“Wilson School District No. 26, Closed with Appropriate Exercises in May 1905.
The session (six months, 1904-5) of the school of Wilson District under the management of T. M. Wilson and Miss Lizzie Epps closed in a most gratifying manner to patrons, pupils and teachers.
“A few recitations, short talks by the teachers and kind words from patrons, a presentation of a book to one of the pupils and a presentation of some beautiful and valuable presents by the primary pupils to their teacher. These, with a few selections on the graphophone constituted the exercises of the day.
“The climax, of the intense interest manifested, was reached when little Erie Thompson and Lula Bagwill on behalf of the primary pupils presented their teacher with a beautiful gold pencil and a gold medal being these words, “Miss Lizzie Epps,” presented by the primary pupils of Wilson school No. 26. Miss Lizzie also received several nice presents from individual pupils.
Erie Thompson was awarded a beautifully bound book for perfect attendance.
Mr. Wilson has taught in this school through a period of years reaching back to 1879, and feels that it has been one of the pleasantest of his life; and in many respects one of the most successful. “
Joe Strode attended school at Viney Grove No. 1, or rather Wilson School District No. 26 near Ardath from the time he was old enough to enter school until three years ago in 1909, when he entered the Sam Houston normal. There were 111 students in 1912 and 88 students in 1925. Miss Virgie Neal was a teacher at Viney Grove in March of 1913.
In 1918 the Collin County Superintendent of Schools said about the Wilson School:
“The Wilson or Viney Grove No. 1 is another progressive school. This district will have the new house completed and will move in by the time this sketch is read. The house is a two-room structure, modern in every pint and is good enough for any community. They had a two-acre plat of ground and all the outside conveniences. This new house will add new enthusiasm to the school interest of this community and to this way will directly touch all the activities of the community. This is the best investment ever made by this district. Miss Norina Strode and Miss Nettie Edmonds are the teachers of this school. They have been at some disadvantage because of so many cases of Measles but this had passed and the remainder of the school will have an increased attendance.”
Prof. and Mrs. J. A. Lee taught at Viney Grove No. 1 in 1935. Prof. Elbert Randles and wife were teachers at the Wilson School, in 1936. Prof. Randles had been principal of the Wilson School for five terms. Prof. Sid Stephens was the third teacher in the Wilson school.
Wilson had a splendid boys basketball team, coached by Prof. Randles. For the five years that he had been at Wilson, they had been in the county Class C finals on each occasion, winning the championship for the first time in 1935. Wilson had 42 students in 1940.
Viney Grove No. 2 was about 5 miles away near of Princeton. It was school district #68.
