Newspaper. WYLIE MAYOR RESIGNS, by Kim M. Aho Wylie – Mayor Don Hughes resigned Tuesday night because of problems with the North Texas Municipal Water District and the newspapers. “This is something I can’t handle,” Hughes said. “It’s bigger than anything I’ve been in before and I’ll have to back off of it.” Hughes’ resignation follows that of former Mayor Pro Tem Harold Spence July 8 and Councilwoman Gelene Dodd in April. Spence resigned after allegations of unpaid delinquent taxes and lack of Wylie residency. Dodd resigned because she could not work with the council In his prepared statement, Hughes mentioned that problems in the city have persisted siince his three-day resignation in April at his first council meeting as mayor.... The city has been working to upgrade standards in the sewage systems to those requested by the North Texas Municipal Water District... “North Texas continues to gripe. We’ve written letters and called and they still say we’re not cooperating,” he added. Hughes said the newspapers are working against the city.... |
MRS. W. F. HUGHES PASSES AWAY HERE THURSDAY.
Newspaper, 1964. Mrs. Cherrie Lee Hughes, 89, passed away Thursday afternoon, at the Parkview, after four months ill health. Funeral services are 10 a.m. Saturday in Harris-Horn Funeral Chapel, Rev. Earl Rogers, officiating, with burial at Wilson Chapel. She was born January 11, 1875 in Lafayette County, Miss., the daughter of Mike and Laura Keel Kisner and had lived in Collin County the past 30 years. Surviving are a son, Bert L. Hughes, San Pedro, Calif; one daughter, Mrs. Laura Mae Dowdy, with whom she made her home, Route 5, McKinney; one grandson, W. G. Rittenhouse and two great-grandchildren, Sonja Gail and Bill Mark Rittenhouse, all of Salina, Kansas, and several nieces and nephew. One sister, Mrs., Denny Jones, of Oxford, Miss., survives. Her husband William Frank Hughes, preceded her in death January 26, 1950. Three children and seven brothers and sisters also preceded her in death. |
