(McKinney) Weekly Democrat - Gazette, November 25, 1937
Former Pastors And Members Introduced; Interesting Church History Written by Mrs. Mattie Stockard, Read; Music, Talks, Feature Program.
The Allen Christian Church observed Homecoming Day, Sunday, November 21. From the opening song until the benediction was pronounced, the interest was good. Prof. Paul Henderson gave the welcome address after which the lord's Supper was observed.
Special music was rendered by the Ladies' Quartet from Plano. Dr. C. H. Morris of Dallas delivered the sermon for the day. At noon basket lunch was served at the W. O. w. Hall. A number of former members fro out-of-town and members of the Methodist and Baptist Churches were present, and the social hour was spent in renewing old friendships and the making of new friends.
In the afternoon, former pastors and visitors were introduced and a church history, written by Mrs. Mattie Stockard from notes of her father, J. L. Brown, was read. Some of the points of interest in the history furnished by Miss Florence Butler are as follows:
About 1885 members of the Christian Church, living around Allen, decided to form an organization in Allen. Services were held in the old schoolhouse with visiting pastors in the pulpit. In 1886, the church was organized with T. J. Ereckson and Owen Mathews as Elders, and J. L. Brown and W. L. Franklin as Deacons. Rev. J. Ben Faulkner was the first pastor. Services were held in the new Baptist Church until the organization could build a church. The building was completed, in 1887 and Rev. Douglas preached the dedicatory sermon in 1888. This building was located on the lot just north of the present church and was used, until 1913, when the present structure was erected.
At the time, Miss Butler became a member of the church, the elders and Deacons were T. J. Erickson, Dr. W. F. Wolford, Leslie Bush, John L. Brown, S. W. Butler, S. P. Bush and J. M. Bush. All of whom have passed away but were represented at the Homecoming by sons and daughters except the last named.
Three daughters and a son, Fred Bush of Dallas, Mrs. Bettie Wolford of McKinney, Mrs. Elkin of Midland and Mrs. Pricie Allen of Plano represented Mr. and Mrs. S. P. Bush. Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Bush were represented by Mrs. Lillian Shults, Edgar and Walter Bush of McKinney; Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Brown by two daughters, Mrs. Jim Angel of Allen and Mrs. Mattie Stockard of West Texas; Dr. and Mrs. Wolford by two daughters, Mrs. Bess Harding of McKinney and Mrs. Lucile Rodgers of Dallas; Mr. and Mrs. T. J. Ereckson by a son, Paul Ereckson of Linden; S. W. Butler by wife and two daughters, Miss Florence Butler, and Mrs. Dona Philpott of Allen. Representatives of Dr. Wolford and S. P. Bush brought a huge basket of beautiful chrysanthemums in honor of their parents. Among the former members from out-of-town were Misses Martha and Billie Cate of Dallas, Mr. and Mrs. N. P. Lynge of Plano, Mr. and Mrs. O. L. Barker and Mrs. Sam Christie of Frisco, Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Petty and Alfred Petty of Lubbock. Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Melton and Willie Brown of McKinney, Mrs. A. R. Ereckson of Linden and Mrs. Pauline Lucas of Texarkana.
One feature of the afternoon program was the ordination of Messrs. W. N. Waters, W. G. Cundiff and Paul Henderson as Elders and Messrs. Earl Story and Ernest Spurgeon as Deacons. Special musical numbers for the afternoon were given by Leslie Bradley of Dallas, W. R. Williams and Mrs. Bailey Whisenant of Allen. The service closed with the singing of "God Be With You" and the benediction. A full copy of the church history will probably be available at a later date.
