A UNIQUE SILVER WEDDING ANNIVERSARY

Saturday, Dec. 16th, was the twentieth-fifth wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Kerr who reside at the corner of Church and Heard Streets. Mr. and Mrs. Kerr lately returned from California where they had gone for the benefit of Mrs. Kerr’s failing health. Upon their return she was taken seriously ill but has partially recovered but not sufficient to warrant their undertaking an elaborate celebration as they had hoped. Knowing their condition and their desire as well, a number of their nieces and nephews conceived the idea of giving them a surprise dinner and congratulations in their home.
A menu was made out and sent to the different parties who could attend stating which each party was to furnish for the occasion. Mr. and Mrs. Kerr were then invited to spend the day with their nephew and niece Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Sneed, 1000 West Hunt street. After they had gone the other parties went in a body to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Kerr and proceeded to arrange for the dining.
When all things were ready, Rev. Glen L. Sneed of Oak Cliff called for then and announced that some of their relatives were visiting them and desired that they come home.
They with Mr. and Mrs. Sneed proceeded to join the jolly crowd at the home of Mr. Kerr.
Immediately upon the arrival of Mr. and Mrs. Kerr they were invited into the dining room to a table laden with the best that the markets of McKinney and Dallas could produce and those well versed in the culinary arts could prepare.
The table was covered with silver dust and bordered with silvery tinsel and the centerpiece was a silver arch from which a silver wedding bell was suspended.
J. H. Sneed was asked to explain the cause of the meeting after which Mr. J. W. Kerr of Celina, an uncle of Mr. Kerr by blood and an uncle of Mrs. Kerr by marriage, who is nearly his 88th anniversary, returned thanks for the food and the fellowship of the meeting.
After all had partaken of the sumptuous dinner they returned to family sitting room where another agreeable surprise awaited the bride and groom.
Quite a number of relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. Kerr who could not attend the dining had written letters of congratulations and good wishes to Mrs. J. H. Sneed, these had been formed into a make-believe Jack Horner pie. This pie was placed in a small iron wagon and Master Ralph Sneed of Dallas and John Klutz of Princeton came into the room smiling and reciting.
“Little Jack Horner sat in the corner,
easing his Christmas pie,
He put in his thumb and pulled out a
plum and said
“Oh, what a good boy am I.”
When they had completed their speech each one present put his thumb into the pie and pulled out one of the letters and beginning with Mrs. Kerr, each one read his message. At some the room filled with laughter, at others the tear drops would start.
After the messages had been read with many a thrill and pleasant memory the meeting was closed with a touching prayer by Rev. Glen L. Sneed and the happy crowd reluctantly took their leave to their respective homes to take up the duties of life again all feeling that among the pleasant memories that shall lighten the burden of life in after years none will be sweeter than the 16th day of December 1922, when they celebrated the silver marriage anniversary of “Uncle Will” and “Aunt Sue” Kerr and earnestly praying that the Lord may spare them for many more years of usefulness.
Those present were:
Mr. and Mrs. F. A. Klutz and sons Robert and John and daughter Nola and Ruth of Princeton.
Mrs. J. A. Snider of Brady, Texas.
Mrs. Dallas Pharr and son, Leonard of Lucas.
