Dr. William Dixon Lair came to Collin County in 1857 and settled between Mantua and Van Alstyne. In 1858 he moved about 1 ½ miles west of Anna. Before coming to Texas, he was a member of the state legislature in Kentucky. He was licensed to preach in the Baptist church, but he was never ordained. In Collin County he practiced medicine around Mantua and Anna. He was a member of the Friendship Baptist Church, which was in the Highland community. Friendship Baptist later moved and became Anna Baptist Church. He served as moderator for the Sister Grove Baptist Association and the Collin County Baptist Association at their annual conventions. He represented the area in the Texas Senate for 2 terms, once in 1863 and once in 1881. He was married 3 times. First to Maria D. Haynes; second to Narcissus B. Barger; and third, in Collin County, to Sallie Jane McWhorter. COLLIN COUNTY CEMETERY INSCRIPTIONS I mistakenly says that he died in 1837. He died in 1887.
The cemetery is fenced with a 4-foot chain link fence. It covers about 1 acre of land. There is no identification sign on the cemetery. The cemetery has about 40 graves, mostly for 2 families - Lair and Riffe. Most of the cemetery has been cleared and is well kept. There are a few stones in the growth on the western side. I do not believe that the cemetery is still active.
A deed for the cemetery could not be found. There is some interest in getting a historical marker for the cemetery. This cemetery was vandalized in 1995 along with most of the cemeteries around Melissa.
