HUSBAND DIES, WIFE MAROONED
Lake Lavon – A McKinney woman was stranded in a boat with the body of her dead husband for more than five hours Thursday before rescuers finally heard her shouts for help.
Mrs. Houston Howard, 1910 North College, told deputies Joey Glass and Sgt. John Thompson when they arrived on the scene near Bratonia Park, her husband, Houston Joel Howard, collapsed and died while working on the boat engine.
She also told deputies that the incident occurred five hours before they arrived after the sheriff’s department was notified of cries for help coming from the lake.
The deputies had cut the security chain on a boat at the edge of the lake and “commandeered” it for rescue efforts, Chief Deputy Royce Abbott said.
Abbott said the pair were responding to the report that calls for help could be heard near Bratonia Park and since no rescue units were available, they “borrowed” the private boat to rescue Mrs. Howard.
The victim’s boat was towed to shore by the deputies.
