...John M. Cope was born in Ill. Jan. 5, 1827 died at Abilene, Tex., July 14, 1902. He married Rachel Smith Nov. 7, 1850. She was born July 25, 1834 in Ohio; died Apr. 18, 1889 Taylor Co., Tex.
One informant said his middle name was ?Miles”, another said “Mantler”; I have no verification. He went thro’ the Civil War as a private, I was told; was a farmer, a Baptist; his parents both from Ky. They had 9 or 10 children all born at Copeville, Collin County, Tex., I am told, as follows:

My gt-grd father was John Miles Cope for which the town of Copeville was named after. I am trying to locate info on his parents Mason W. Cope and Anna (McCoy) Cope...
Mason W. Cope and John Miles were born in Kentucky. When Mason was 30 years old he moved his family to (1834) Clinton Co., Missouri. Wiley Cope Mason’s father, went with Mason to Missouri and died in Davies Co., Mo. in 1848. 8 of Wiley’s 9 grown children moved to Mo. at the same time. Around 1844 Mason and his brother-in-law James McCoy moved to Nacogdoches Co., Texas. They were the only ones in that family that I have found to move there.
The 1850 Cherokee Co., TX census shows Mason and family living there. By 1851 Mason and family were living in Collin Co. The 1860 Collin Co., census shows Mason and 2 sons and 2 married daughters living there. The 1870 census does not show Mason and Anna in the county. I do not know what happened to them....
I would like to add that John Miles and his brother James were in the 16th Tex Cav in the Civil War. I have found 22 battles listed with the 16th Tx Cav. involved. From Jenkins Ferry to Millikens Bend....
John was still in Collin Co. in 1880 but in 1889 he was living in Cedar Gap, Taylor Co., Tex. John died in 1902 and is buried in the Cove Cemetery outside of Tuscola, Taylor Co., Tx. 2 sons William E. and James M. Cope are buried with him.
My grd-parents Levi B. Cope and Loula (Anderson) Cope are buried in the Roscoe Cemetery in Nolan Co., Tex. My father and mother were both born in Texas. Erwin Truman Cope (1909) and Frankie Louise Applegate (1918). Erwin died in 1988 and Frankie died in 1995 in California. ...The Anderson family came to Texas in 1833 from Tennessee. My gt-grd father George W. Anerson was born near the Alamo (1835). 5 months before the Alamo battle. I found a militry record of his father David Anderson killed by Comanches in 1840.
