BURRUS FAMILY

William C. Burrus started a store in Weston in 1854. Later he came to McKinney to settle and bought a small flour mill, that George M. Watts had established on a small branch in the northeast part of town in 1856. In a few years he helped to establish the first real flour mill in McKinney where the old Ice plant stands.
During the Texas Centennial in 1936, the old hewn logs of the original Burrus Mill were taken apart and hauled to the Fair grounds in Dallas. The mill was reconstructed and is still a part of the yearly exhibits at the State Fair.
William Carrol Burrus was born in Missouri, in December of 1831 and died in McKinney June 29, 1911, He served in the Civil War in Company B., 15th Texas. This company later consolidated with the 10th Texas Cavalry. He was made first Lt., and when his captain was killed at Atlanta, he was made Captain. He was badly wounded at the battle at Franklin and was hospitalized at Columbia, Tennessee as a prisoner. After the war he farmed arid milled, and in June of 1869 married Mary A. Covert of Collin County, the daughter of Luke B. Covert who had settled in Collin. They became the parents of the following children, Mrs. Edgar Averett of Claude, Texas, J. Perry, and Mrs. Richard W. Burrage of McKinney.
William Burrus opened the mill northeast of town in McKinney and closed it in 1888. Soon he became interested in the Alliance Mill. William Burrus was first married to Mary C. Guyer of Missouri in 1869 and had three children by her.
