DANIEL HERRING JR.
Biography.
Daniel Herring, Jr. was born March 2, 1812, in North Carolina. He was a sixth generation American. He arrived in Texas in the 1840s, by way of Illinois. He received a 640 acre Peter’s Colony land grant and settled near present-day Murphy. His property actually straddled the Collin/Dallas County line, but he built his house on the highest point, which was in Collin County. His first home was a log cabin, but around 1862 he built a large two-story frame house.
The family says Daniel Herring’s family arrived on Christmas Eve of 1848. His wife, Mary Deck, is buried in the Murphy Cemetery with a date of December 7, 1843 or 1848 on her stone. Either date would make the Christmas Eve date wrong.]
Daniel’s first wife, Mary Deck, died in 1843 [or 1848] and is one of the first burials in the Murphy Cemetery. His mother died in 1855 and is also buried in the Murphy Cemetery. The children of Daniel and Mary Deck are Joshua Lawrence, John, Anna, Sallie Jane, Mariah, Martha, and Nancy. Sallie married Eli Hogge. Martha married J. K. McAmis. Both couples are buried in the Herring/Hogge Cemetery. Daniel’s second marriage was to Eliza Newman. Daniel and Eliza Newman Herring are buried in the Herring/Hogge Cemetery.
Eli Hogge was a school teacher who came to Collin County from South Carolina. He married Sally Jane Herring. While he was away during the Civil War, she made quilts to sell to the people of Plano. At one time Eli Hogge delivered the mail from Rockwall to McKinney on horseback. They eventually settled northeast of Wylie. Eli and Sally Hogge had eleven children, 2 of whom were stillborn. At the time of his death at age 55, there were still five children at home. The youngest child of Eli and Sally Hogge, Edna May, married James McDonald.
