WOMAN DIES IN WESTMINSTER FIRE
McKinney Courier-Gazette, by Shawn Vargo
Westminster – A fire here Sunday claimed the life of a 97-year-old woman.
The blaze occurred at the home of Mrs. Orilla Corley at 312 N. Church St. around 5:20 p.m. The Collin County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call at 5:23 and immediately began contacting local emergency units.
According to preliminary investigations, the fire is believed to have originated in the kitchen area near the back porch in the southeast corner of the house. The cause of the blaze is still under investigation by officials.
Westminster police arrived at the scene at 5:36 p.m.
The sheriff’s office reported that because the Westminster Volunteer Fire Department could not be reached by phone, the Anna Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched at 5:23 p.m.
Records show the Anna firefighters arrived at the scene at 5:38 p.m. The Westminster VFD did arrive at the scene to assist, however, their arrival times are still being looked at, according to Collin County Fire Marshal Larry Bartlett.
By the time the first units were on the scene, the house was fully engulfed in flames, reports show.
Concerned neighbors reported that Ms. Corley had been bedridden for the last three or four years. Because of her condition, neighbors say rescue attempts were unsuccessful because they could not remove her from her bed. Officials, however, could not confirm why Corley was not easily accessible to rescue attempts.
Corley reportedly had a nurse who cared for her six days a week and had grandchildren who lived in a trailer behind the house who also looked after her. Sunday was the nurse’s day off.
Two other injuries from the fire were reported.
Charlotte Voss, the granddaughter of the victim, was taken to Parkland Memorial Hospital Burn Center for treatment. Her current condition had not been updated at presstime.
Steven McBride, who made an attempt to rescue Corley, was taken to North Texas Medical Center to be treated for breathing difficulties.
Both were transported by Central Ambulance Services. [rest missing.]
