James Gates was born in Georgia. In 1860 he was an overseer in Perry County, Alabama. He enlisted in an Alabama unit for the Civil War. See the Military Section for information of James Gates’ Confederate service.
James Gates and Sarah Elizabeth Huey were married in Tallapoosa County, Alabama in 1859. Sarah Elizabeth was a daughter of James A. and Mary Huey.
The family came to Texas in 1865 or 66. Son James Thomas was listed as born in Mississippi. Their daughter, Sarah, was listed as born in Texas. In 1870 they were in Collin County with Sarah’s family, Hueys, living next door.
After Sarah’s death in 4876, James M. married his second wife, Louella White, in Collin County in 1877. Louella was a daughter of John Louis and Lucinda Mastress White. She was born in Missouri.
James M. died in 1879. Louella White Gates was listed in the 1880 census as a widow. Living with her were her son John and four Gates step children. Several members of the White family came to Texas before 1880 and were living in the Murphy area.
After James M.’s death, Louella Gates married W. H. Kilgore in 1880. She died in 1882 and was buried in this cemetery as Louella Kilgore.
