Burris - Finch House - McKinney

A two-story brick, this home was one of two homes built on the “hill” west of McKinney in 1914 by J. Perry Burrus of the Burrus Flour Mills of McKinney, Sherman, Dallas and Ft. Worth. It later sold to Henry R. Finch, a Texas legislator, and his wife, Fanny. Local philanthropists the Finches donated Finch Park to the City of McKinney. Mrs. Finch was the first woman in Texas to be elected to a school board. The basement was used by Paula Finch for a kindergarten and dancing classes. The home was purchased in 1948 by Dr. Glenn Mitchell, and his wife Robbie. Mrs. Mitchell was a published poet, and for several years was Poet Laureate of Texas.
