McKinney Daily Courier Gazette, August 5, 1938
by Mrs. O. S. Scott
In company with Mrs. J. S. Scott of Ardmore, Oklahoma this representative visited the general merchandise store of W. Pickett Smith and family of Lowery Crossing and also in their home, recently. Mr. and Mrs. Smith have been residing at Lowery Crossing for only a short time, coming there from Longview in June. This is a good location on the Culleoka-McKinney Pike road and also on the Gravel road leading north to the McKinney and Princeton Highway. It is surrounded by good farming country, whose citizenship are glad to welcome Mr. and Mrs. Smith into their midst. On the afternoon of our visit Mr. Smith was being assisted by his little nine-year-old daughter, Doris Fern, who makes a most obliging little clerk. Mrs. Smith was on the sick list but was improving at the time of our visit.
Mrs. Smith is the former Miss Virgie Bagwill, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. L. E. Bagwill, who came to Texas for Ava, Illinois by way of Arkansas and Oklahoma. Mrs. Smith was only sixteen years of age when they came to Texas and located on the Uncle Dave Bomar farm, later then moved to Altoga, where they reared the following children: Mrs. Ebe Kindle of Celina. Mrs. Roe Lawson, Route 4, near Chambersville; Joe Bagwill in Altoga; and Elmer Bagwill, L. E. Bagwill passed away on April 13, 1926 at the age of seventy-five years. Mrs. Mary E. (Easterly) Bagwill died July 12, 1936 at the age of 82 years. They are both sleeping in the cemetery at Altoga.
W. Pickett Smith is a son of the late Reuben and Manata Smith. His parents came to Texas from Georgia when he was a small child and located west of Altoga. In 1903 they moved to Tioga where the father passed away in the same year and is buried in the Masonic Cemetery at Pilot Point. Mrs. Smith, the mother died ten years later. They were the parents of nine children as follows: Mrs. G. W. Hyde, Pueblo, Colorado; Leonard Smith, Three Rivers, Mrs. Alice Maynor and Mrs. Emma Samples of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; Mrs. Martha Benton, Route 2, Arlington. Bill Smith died near Princeton ten years ago and two children die in infancy.
W. P. (Picket) Smith and Virgie Bagwill were united in marriage December 20, 1903. They are the parents of nine children, seven girls and two boys as follows: Burton H. Smith, manager of the Duke & Ayres store at Longview; Mrs. Roland Wallace, 611 Idlewood Drive, Longview; Mrs. Joe Poston, Route 1, McKinney; Mrs. Loveta Sickler, Los Lumas, New Mexico; Doyle Smith, 2840 Hawthorne Street, Dallas; Mrs. Ina Phillips, 657 West Page Street, Dallas; Miss Mildred Smith, 2840 Hawthorne Street, Dallas; Mrs. Ray Farley, Route 4, McKinney; and Doris Fern aged nine at home. Mr. and Mrs. Smith live in a cottage near their store. They sell all kinds of merchandise and also gas and oils. The Smiths are members of the East Fork Baptist Church of which Rev. J. Ben Snider is pastor. One of the first visits of Mrs. W. P. Smith in Lowery Crossing was thirty-seven years ago when she attended a baptizing in East Fork Creek where the new bridge now spans the creek.
