COUPLE CELEBRATES 66 YEARS OF MARRIAGE AS WIFE TURNS 90
The home of Clyde and Ruby Flesher, 800 S. Ricketts, Howe, was the scene of a happy and joyous occasion on Sunday, March 20, when Ruby’s niece, Ruth Hughes, and nephew, Billie Don Hix, and their families planned a family dinner to mark the couple’s 66th wedding anniversary and Ruby’s 90th birthday.
Clyde Flesher and Ruby George walked off the porch of her parents’ home while they were visiting with neighbors, got in Clyde’s 1929 Ford and drove to Durant, Okla. It was a sandstormy Sunday afternoon.
Clyde was born the youngest of eight children to George and Ella (Partman) Flesher. He attended Mantua school and church. He has a little New Testament his Sunday School teacher, Mrs. Ola Baker, gave him when he was 11 years old.
As age 92 he believes he may be the oldest living person born in the Mantua area. He loves to talk about the many families he grew up with at Mantua.
Ruby was born near Weston on the farm of her grandparents, Tom and Jane (Reed) George, to Denny and Rhonda (Baker) George. Her older sister was Frankie May (George) Hix. Ruby also celebrated her 90th birthday on March 21, 1998. She attended Lone Star and Van Alstyne schools.
The Fleshers started farming on Ruby’s parents’ farm and continued farming 43 years. They retired when the four-land highway cut their farm in half in 1963. They bought two lots in Howe and built a new house, where they now live. The Fleshers have outlived all their immediate families and now have only nieces, nephews and cousins.
They are members of the Parkview Church of Christ and Joy Club, both of Sherman.
The couple received many cards and telephone calls, and a beautiful anniversary and birthday cake with punch was served in the afternoon.
Ruby recommends that anyone phoning let it ring several times as “we don’t get up as fast as we did 66 years ago.”
