SALATHIAL COFFEY
Letter, July 15, 1957
.... I know that you know that Collin McKinney’s mother was a Mildred Coffey. This being the case do you suppose that the many Coffeys that came later to Collin County did so on account of this kin-ship?
The Coffey I am most interested in is Salathiel Coffey who came to Texas in 1855 and settled in Collin county. At least that is when he purchased land in your County. He, of course, could have come as early as 1852. His sister Mrs. Woolford with her family came later. And the Reubin Coffey I mentioned to you, was a much younger brother, who also came to your County. How may of the other brothers and sisters of Sale Coffey came along I don’t know....
Salathial (Sale) Coffey’s eldest child and son was William Stanton Coffey. He married Mary E. Lucas on Feb. 25th, 1866. She was from Lucas, Texas. ... W. S. Coffey was in the Confederate Army and Officer I believe.
In a Book published in 1889 “Biographical Souveniers of the State of Texas” there is an excellent sketch on Salathiel Coffey. Some of the dates are a bit off, but that could be due to poor copy. It is stated in this Book that Salathial Coffey was the son of Eli Coffey of Russell County, Ky. This Book also has a full page picture of S. Coffey and he is a very handsome Gent. indeed. (Salathiel M. a cousin Polly Coffey who was the dau. of Nathan Coffey, a Rev. Soldier)
S. Coffey was a Mason in Ky. as well as in Texas. He was affiliated with the St. John Lodge #51, 10-25-56. However he demitted 10-30-1858 from this lodge and was a charter member of the Plano, Texas lodge #235 (1858-4-1882) He, in 1890 was again affiliated with the McKinney, St. John Lodge #51, and remained a member ‘til his death May 20, 1892. I have been unable to located to which Russell County Lodge S. Coffey belonged.
S. Coffey was his wife Mary Ann McFarland Ballew Coffey both died in McKinney or Collin County, and I am told that the very large estates owned by both were divided as per the div. made in S. Coffey’s Will filed for probate June 6, 1892. I have a photostat of this Will and I must say that it is most informative. Sterling Coffey and his two sisters who married Kirby men were the children of this marriage. The rest of S. Coffey’s children were by his first wife Nancy Dunbar, who died in Ky, in 1852. (This date differs with the date given in the Sketch.)
I understand that there were some Ballew children, but I only know of one descendent and that is Mr. Melvin Ballew, who is one of the announcers at your local Radio Station....
THE SALATHIEL COFFEY FAMILY
Family history.
Salathiel Coffey was born in Russell County, Kentucky, April 20, 1812. His father, Eli, was born in North Carolina, May 8, 1775 but moved on to Kentucky when just a youth. He died there July 18, 1833. He was a bootmaker by trade and spent most of his life in his shoe shop but after moving to Kentucky turned his attention to farming and distilling. His wife was Mary Coffey and she bore twelve children, the fifth of them was Salathiel. He grew up in Kentucky helping his father. In 1855 he and his family came to Texas and in 1857 settled on the land where he lived for many years, near Allen, Texas.
He was twice married. August 20, 1835 he married Nancy Dunbar of Kentucky and to this union were born nine children, Willis S., Jesse P., Lettie, Mary A., William S., Harriett, Milton, Zachariah T., and Nancy J. Nancy died Nov. 14, 1853 and Salathiel married Mrs. Mary A. (Ballew) McFarland of Kentucky May 10, 1854. To this union were born three children Margaret E., Josie C., and Sterling P.
