John Cloyd came to America in 1758. He was under age when his father died and had a guardian, David Cloyd. He married Margaret Scott Aug. 12, 1758. Margaret Scott came to America with an uncle who was a ships captain, her parents being dead. She was originally from Belfast Ireland and inherited 76 acres of land where the present city of Belfast stands. It being willed to her for as long as wood grew and water runs. She was thought to have consumption (TB). Her uncle was returning to Ireland to dispose of her property when he was shipwrecked and never heard from again. Her certificate of church membership in Ireland was for many years held by The Rev. J. L. Alexander of Nashville, Tenn. It is believed that she was related to Sir Walter Scott, who had relatives driven by religious persecution from Dumfries to the northern part of Ireland.
John Cloyd bought land in Augusta, Virg. which he sold in 1765. In 1769 he received a grant of land, 55 acres in Montgomery Co. In 1870 Social Security as we know it was unheard of, sons and daughters were expected to take care of their elderly parents. What better example than the above, but this social security was spelled LOVING CARE.
Jane Bernice Cloyd was my great-great aunt, her parents Elijah and Susan Rudolph being my great-great grandparents. Another Rudolph daughter Harriet married A. J. Abe Hall and they were my Great Grandparents.
It gives me great pleasure to think that I might drop a clue or two for some other family searcher and help them along the way.
