Edward Richard Gay was my great-grandfather, my father having been Morris Gay, the oldest son of John Maston Gay.
Letter 2.
My husband is a descendant of Edward Richard Gay who was farming in the area of Lavon in the 1870s and 1880s. We are trying to find out if he came to Texas by himself or with family...
The earliest deed [for people with the last name Gay] is 1875, but we believe that the family came to Texas earlier than that. At the DAR Library recently, I found a reference to a Mrs. Lou Gay who had come to Lavon from Louisiana in 1856. Was this Mrs. Lou Gay M. O. Gay, the wife of L. B. Gay from Hardeman County, Tennessee?...
We are particularly interested in finding out if Edward Richard’s father, Edwin Gay, came to Texas. We have not been able to find the family in any 1860 or 1870 census. They disappear from Hardeman County, Tennessee about 1856. L. B. Gay appears to stay, but we find him in Union Parish, Louisiana also. Edward Richard would have been 10 years old in 1860 and 20 years old in 1870. We would like to find out when he came to Texas.
