CHANDLER, TOM
RECEPTION PLANNED FOR 90TH BIRTHDAY
Newspaper, 1980.
Tom Scott Chandler Sr., who has lived at 711 White, McKinney for over 30 years, will “turn” 90 on May 3.
Hosts for a reception in his honor on Sunday, May 4 will be his daughters, Mrs. K. W. Thompson and Louise Pitts of Ft. Worth, Mrs. Bob Williams of Arcadia, La., and his sons, Tom Chandler, Jr. of Lubbock, and Dan Chandler of Casper, Wyo.
His many friends, acquaintances and relatives are invited to call that day between 2-4 p.m. at the First Baptist Church on W. Louisiana to exchange memories and wish him well.
He was born in 1890 in the Foote community west of McKinney, and with the exception of four years during the 1920s, which he spent in the Panhandle of Texas, he has lived his entire life in Collin County, Where he farmed for many years, then moved into town in 1942.
His occupation for a number of years was doing small carpentry jobs around town.
Now semi-retired, he drives to church, to the nursing home to visit old friends, to the grocery store, and to the laundromat where he does his own washing.
In his spare time he raises a large vegetable garden and berry patch, a part of which he turns into a food bank in his deep freezer.
For a recent arts and crafts show at a Forever Young meeting at the First Baptist Church, his “show and tell” was a fudge-marble cake.
Chandler married Willie Mae Allen on Oct. 16, 1910, and before her death in May, 1977, they had not only celebrated their golden wedding anniversary but had also well passed their 60th anniversary.
They raised eight of the then children born to them, although one of their daughters, Kathleen Duncan, preceded her mother in death.
Chandler has 16 grand-children, 23 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren., making a total of 48 living descendents, plus in-laws, who enjoy visiting Dad, Papaw, or Great-Papa, as the case may be.
