Sam Bogart Family
BOGART FAMILY
Letter, Mabel Fitch
I figured I had distant relatives living in Collin Co. They are descendents of Sam’s [ ] daughters - Jane Clements and M. Ellen Harberger. These girls and two sons moved with the Bogarts from Mo. The two sons died young and left no heirs....
I am proud of my great, great, grandfather, Sam [Bogart], and the role he played in helping to shape the state of Texas. ....
Sam had a brother, Alexander, who lived and died in Ray County. I think he had sister named Catherine, but am searching for proof. Sam was born in Carter Co., Tenn. and lived in Blount County, too....
SAMUEL BOGART
Family history.
Samuel Bogart has been termed by historians as one of the great men on early Texas. He was born in Carter County, Tennessee April 2, 1797. He fought in the Battle of New Orleans in 1815. In 1818 he married and moved to Illinois and while living there he engaged in the Black Hawk War of 1832. The next year he moved to Missouri and helped to expel the Mormons for the state. In 1839 he came to Texas, settled in Washington County. While here he commanded a company of Rangers in the Mier Expedition in Old Mexico.
He came with his family to Collin County in 1845 and settled in what is now the Woodlawn Community. He was a driving force in developing this section. He served in the State Legislature from this county in 1847, 1849, 1851, and 1859. He held various positions of honor in the Democratic Party in Texas. He died March 11, 1861.
The Bogart home stood intact until the 1960s when it gradually fell apart. His home was a stopping place on the road to Jefferson in East Texas.
