LEAGUE CEMETERY - WESTMINSTER
CR424
CR424
This cemetery was larger. According to COLLIN COUNTY CEMETERY INSCRIPTIONS I, the road curved around it. Over the years the road crews have gradually taken away the north side of the cemetery and straightened the road. There is an effort being made to recover the cemetery from under the road and to get the road to curve around it again. The land around the cemetery belongs to the A. Hendricks family.
At one time this cemetery was about 20-feet square with around 15 graves. It is now about 10 to 12 feet wide and 20 feet long. It is fenced but has not been maintained. The road crews are causing the fence to lean away from the road into the cemetery. The bois d'arc trees have been killed by the graders.
All of the stones were stolen from the cemetery around 1980. The Hendricks family ran articles in the Dallas, McKinney, and Sherman papers asking for the return of the stones. Five stones were returned. The Hendricks family reset the stone in concrete in 1993 in a north/south configuration. The stones for the League brothers are set in separate concrete bases about 3 feet high and 3 feet square.
James M. League July 29, 1835 - March 27, 1859
John L. League December 16, 1839 - December 8, 1857
Elizabeth League April 8, 1807 - January 22, 1890
Thomas G. Walker January 16, 1839 - March 2, 1890
Male Infant March 31, 1887 - January 12, 1888
There is a story that there was an Indian attack on the League family. One of the boys went for help. He got as far as the cemetery before he died.
There is a reference to the first wife of a Mr. Brodley (Bradley) and two of her children being buried east of Anna along the north road in a cemetery that already had several graves in 1870. It was probably referring to this cemetery.
Since my visit a sturdy fence has been added to the road side of the cemetery to try to keep the road crews from claiming more of the cemetery.
