This substantial home in a setting of wide green lawn and trees, was for many years the home of the John Hill family. The house was built around 1889 as a home for the growing family. John Hill, himself, was descended from the pioneer Hill family that played such an integral part in the development of McKinney from raw frontier territory to the pleasant town of today, and a number of Hills are still active in the business of the town.
John Hill was the son of Dick Coleman Hill (1850-1934) who was like other members of the Hill family – a breeder and seller of fine mules. His business was known as Hill and Webb.... All of the Hill men were mule dealers, D.C., Tuck, Woot, and Dock Hill, all were involved in this lucrative operation.... In this home John Hill and his wife, Fanny Brooks Hill, reared their two children, Jack and Frances and during their growing up years the home was the scene of many parties for the young people of McKinney....
Even before John Hill bought the north half of Block 6 in the newly opened Tucker Addition, the land itself was a historic part of town, due in large part to the activities of a great horseman, Jack Tucker. He owned large tracts of land in the area and used to raise fine race horses, often staging horse races on a level tract of land...
