Susannah died from cancer. She was a daughter of Ethelred and Mary Huguley Ross. She was born in Georgia. Her husband was killed in the Civil War. Zachariah was a son of Travis and Martha Patsy Leverett McKenney. In the 1910 census Susannah is not living with her daughter Mary (Pollie). She is buried in the Decatur/Maxwell/Murphy Cemetery along Tullalah McKenney Johnon.
AGED LADY DIES
Mrs. Susie McKinney, who had been suffering from cancer for several years, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. W. T. Bryant, near Centerville, Sunday, aged 78 years. Funeral services were held and interment was in the cemetery at Murphy Tuesday. Mrs. McKinney was a devout christian lady, and bore her long suffering with patience and fortitude.
She leaves several children, all grown and married.

Susannah Ross McKenney
Susanah Ross McKinney was born December 17, 1823 in Wilkes County, Georgia. She was the oldest child of Etheled Ross and Mary Hugley Ross. Ethelred Ross was born in 1786 probably in South Carolina. He married Mary Hugley, the daughter of Job and Aley Huguley of Wilkes County, Georgia.
Ethelred and Martha had three children Susannah, Alley, and Job. Martha died before 1827. In 1827 Etherlred married Matilda Hillyard of Wilkes County, Georgia on December 24. She was called "Hildy" and raised his young children and several more.
On December 31, 1846, Susanah married Zachariah McKenney in Lincoln County, Georgia, Zachariah was the youngest child of Travis W. and Martha Leverett McKinney of Lincoln County, Georgia.
Susannah and Zachariah moved to Alabama before the birth of their first child, Mary Alsine in 1848. The McKenney's settled in the area between Auburn and Tuskegee in the current counties of Lee and Macon.
In the 1850 Alabama census the McKenney's were living in Auburn, Macon County, Alabama. Zachariah was was 24 year's old and a farmer. Susannah was age 23. They had three children Mary 4, Martha 3, and Benjamin 2.
In the 1860 Alabama census Zachariah was 34 years old and still farming. He had living with him Susannah 34, Mary A. 13, Martha 11, Robert 9, Drucilla 8, and William 2. They had lost two son's Benjamin who was born in 1839 died in 1860 and Marcus Ross who was born in 1851 and died in 1854.
During the Civil War, Zachariah enlisted in the confederate Army on July 25, 1863 in Columbus, Georgia. He was in the 28th Georgia Artillery Battalion. From family stories Zachariah was killed in an unknown place on March 19, 1865.
After the Civil War, Susannah moved her family to Texas. She loaded her children and few personal items in a covered wagon and left Alabama. When she was ready to leave her two Negroes, whom her father Ethelred Ross had given her as a wedding gift, begged her not to leave them. So she had them pack their things and come with her.
Susannah was 4'9", she carried a gun and sat on gold pieces wrapped in a napkin during the trip to Texas that took nearly a year. They settled in Collin County, near Murphy and purchased land on the Maxwell Heir's survey in 1871. There were already some family members in Texas. Zachariah's sister, Mary and her husband Starnes Moreman lived near Plano and ran a grist mill.
Soon after her arrival in Collin County a cholera epidemic hit Collin County. Susannah lost a few family members. Her granddaughter, Susannah S. Beck, who was born on the trip to Texas and her daughter Martha Sally Robinson, Susannah Beck was born January 2, 1867 and died September 4, 1874, she was the daughter of Mary Alsine McKenney and her first Frank Beck. Martha Sally was the wife of Mancel Robinson, both she and Susannah Beck are buried in the Spring Creek Cemetery in Collin County, Texas.
Susannah and her family farmed and raised cattle on their land in Collin County. She continued to live in Collin County for the next 40 years.
