CLYDE BARROW AND BONNIE PARKER
Extracted from Running with Bonnie and Clyde, by John Neal Phillips
Clyde and Bonnie Parker were from the Dallas area. They went through Collin County many times. There are several stories of their staying with Collin County residents and of the police turning their heads the other way when the gang was spotted.
One of their gang members, Ralph Fults, was born in Anna and worked in the county. Some of the gang members spent time in the county jail. In December of 1932 Ralph Fults was in the Collin County jail for stealing a car in Farmersville. He had a visit from his "cousin", Bonnie Parker. She gave him a pack of Camel cigarettes and said, "We’re taking you and Ted ( Rogers) out of here today." The jail break was thwarted when the prisoners were moved to Huntsville the following morning.
Clyde and his gang in April of 1932 robbed a hardware store in Celina taking rifles, shotguns, and cases of ammunition.
In 1935 Raymond Hamilton and Ralph Fults were returning to Collin County from Oklahoma when they were ambushed on the old Weston road. They escaped the ambush, going on to Weston. They stopped at the house of the Bill Mayes family. The following day they took 3 hostages and escaped in the family car to Mansfield, where they released the hostages unharmed.
In 1966 part of the movie Bonnie and Clyde was filmed at the Lake Lavon Café with local residents acting as customers.
