PROSPER GROWING
HAYS IS COMMUNITY, COUNTY SALESMAN by Col. Tom Emerson
Prosper– It doesn’t take long for Prosper Mayor Chester G. Hays to convince someone that Collin County is a wonderful place to live and that it has a bright future, provided the people take advantage of the opportunities offered. He is a native of Collin County.
Hays was born in the Bloomdale community in Collin County on Jan. 15, 1904. At 62, he is active in everything he feels is good for his community and county.
I asked Hays what his business was and he told me he had retired– retired from retail business which he had engaged in for 36 years in the same block.
Let’s go back a piece– and follow this good citizen’s career. He attended school in Prosper and graduated from Prosper High in 1933. [sic] Upon graduation he went to work in a garage and service station and continued with this job until 1929. On March 1, 1929, Hays bought the business and operated the business for 12 years with success.
Stock Farmer.
In 1941 Hays entered the grocery business and here he spent 24 years, retiring on March 1, 1965. Actually, Hays is not completely retired for he operates a stock farm on his 235 acres just north of Prosper and runs a good herd of commercial cattle.
Hays served on the Prosper school board for 13 years, city council for two years and at present is serving his second term as Mayor. He is a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Prosper Boosters Club.
On Aug. 11, 1929, he married the former Miss Leta Robinson, a native of Prosper, and to this union two boys were born – Billy G. Hays, who lives in Las Cruces, New Mexico, where he is business manager of the LTV plant; and Dennie L. Hays, who lives in Sonora, Texas. He is a teacher in the Sonora High School and backfield coach.
By faith the Hays are Methodists....
