Oath of Allegiance – As Captain of company D, Joseph Chastain signed a hand written oath of loyalty to Texas, the confederacy and his Company. Not required to serve, older men in Collin County volunteered and formed their own companies. The county sent more men per capita than almost any other in Texas, although it voted against secession.

I Joseph I. Castain do Solemnly swear that I will support the constitution and Laws of the state of Texas and also the constitution and Laws of the Confederate State of America so long as I remain a citizen thereof and that I will true allegiance bear to that same and that I will discharge the duties incumbent on me as captain of a company of the state Troops of the 2nd Regt. 15th Brigade to the best of my skill and ability so help me God.
