Wilmeth - north of McKinney at Wilmeth Road
The Wilmeth community was located in the area of Wilmeth Road between present-day US75 and SH5. The Wilmeth homestead was on the east side of SH5 near the intersection with SH5. Many of McKinney's earliest residents settled at Wilmeth. Many of them are buried in the McLarry Cemetery.
J. B. Wilmeth came to Collin County in 1846. He is credited with starting the First Christian Church in McKinney. (This would have been before the split of the Christian Church and the Church of Christ.). He also started the first public school in the county. Both the school and the church met on the second story of his home for several years. J. B. Wilmeth was a teacher in the school for 30+ years. Many of his children were also teachers there. The school merged with the McKinney School District in the 1920s.
The Wilmeth School building was located on the northwest corner of the golf course. Wilmeth Chapel was started by one of J. B. Wilmeth's sons. It was located south of Wilmeth Road about 300 yards west of SH5.
