COLE, ANDREW JACKSON
COLE, ANDREW JACKSON
Letter, 1989.
....My great grandmother was born in Collin County on December 13, 1873. She was the second daughter of Andrew Jackson Cole and Hannah (Etta, I think) Cole. A. J. Cole was born in Tennessee and Hannah was born in Indiana. Mary Jane’s older sister Laura A. Cole was born in Iowa. I find A. J. Coles family in the 1880 census in Justice Precinct #4, Collin Co., Tx.; at that time there were the A. J. and Hannah and four daughters. The Census record also shows a 19 year old man named James Songley who was also from Tennessee. Two more daughters were born after 1900....
Mary Jane Cole married George Washington Putman in McKinney, Collin Co., on October 12, 1891. George Washington Putman and his family had come to Texas from Alabama around 1875. I have heard several accounts of this migration, all of them second or third hand. The family story is that George Washington Putman was a orphan who had been living with his grandparents and he walked as a young boy from Alabama. His obituary stated that he migrated with his family.
Apparently, Mary Jane and George Washington Cole left Collin Co. shortly after their marriage to settle around Pilot Point, Denton Co. I believe that my grandmother Josie Putman, who was their third child was born in Denton Co. I am confirming whether or not her two older siblings were born in Collin or Denton Co. The A. J. Cole’s left Denton Co. around 1906 and settled in Jefferson Co., OK and lived there until their deaths in the late 1940's. I have found the family in the 1900 census in Justice Precinct #6 in Denton Co., Tx,. however I don’t know if that is the Pilot Point area or not.... I do know for example that Mary Jane’s mother remarried a J. D. Whitaker, however, I don’t know when, where or why.
