Bethany Christian Church - Plano
In memory of the Bethany Christian Church that has recently been torn down.
As we gather together Sunday afternoon, May 5th, at Bethany to decorate the graves of our loved one, our hearts were saddened as our eyes gazed upon the sacred ground, where once stood a small country church. Most all of the families that helped build this church have passed on, but their remains are buried in a little cemetery not far from the grounds of the church they loved.
In August 1877 the first Christian Church was built and in May 1891 the second church was erected.
If we pause and glance on the faded yellow sheets of the records of the Bethany Christian Church we will find the names of the ones that shared in contributing to the building, including:
R. C. Clark, W. J. Howard, R. W. Carpenter, Wm. Bush, E. F. Elkin, C. S. Haggard, J. H. Allen, J. A. Straily, Jas. Angel, W. H. Leer, J. W. Franklin, L. W. Oglesby, Geo. A. Halsy, R. W. Bounds, Kelner and son, J. W. Bains, W. L. Maroney, S. B. Kirkpatrick, Sam Young, R. W. Roach, W. W. Coker, Glenn Bush, T. M. Boone, J. P. Dowell, I. D. Newsome and Sons, J. L. White, A. Gulliett, R. Mattlie, J. H. Bingham, H. A. McDonald, J. Crouch, R. C. White, G. R. Yantis, P. B. Muse, H. W. Ardinger, J. W. Throckmorton, former Governor of Texas; H. M. Markham, J. M. Rodgers, and S. P. Lunsford.
