...George W. Fox, born in 1867, was the son of Sam H. and Sallie Fox. His father served in the Confederate Army throughout the Civil War and was well known in organizing Confederate reunions in the following years. He wrote a small book. “Record of Alexander’s Regiment Confederate Soldiers” which was published in 1918 by A. H. Planck of McKinney. Sam Fox’s mother was Frances Herndon, a member of the pioneer Herndon family who settled at Buckner, the first county seat of Collin County, during the time of the Texas Republic.
George W. Fox’s business career was in real estate with his headquarters in the Fox Building at 207 East Virginia Street. In 1919, he is listed as being auditor for Collin County. He married Lula Lillard and was the father of two daughters, Grace and Maud. Lula Lillard Fox died in 1919. In 1922 Mr. Fox sold the large house to Gibson Caldwell.
The Gibson Caldwell family occupied the College Street house for sixty years, from the time of its purchase in 1922 until after Mr. Caldwell’s death in 1981. In 1909 Gibson Caldwell married Goldie Warden, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. F. M. Warden, and sister of General John A. Warden of the United States Army. The Caldwells were the parents of two daughters, Marion and Goldie Mae, and one son, James.
Caldwell began his business career as manager of the McKinney Elevator Company, then became associated with the Collin County Mill and Elevator Company. He became president of the company in 1918 and continued in that position until the flour milling in McKinney was closed in 1938. Mr. Caldwell became a director of the Collin County National Bank in 1939, and in 1954 was elected chairman of the board. He was a longtime member of the McKinney School Board, and in 1960, the large junior highschool on Louisiana was named “Caldwell Middle School” in his honor. In 1979 he was named McKinney’s Citizen of the Year.” He was a member of the Rotary Club for sixty-one years. The Caldwells were members of the First Methodist Church. He served on the Church’s official Board, and Mrs. Caldwell was organist. The “Caldwell Annex,” a building providing areas for fellowship and classes, was named in honor of the family. ...
