DOWELL, J. P. STORE
J. P. DOWELL STORE
McKinney Courier Gazette, December 29, 1901
This is another pioneer mercantile institution that has held the confidence of the people of the county for thirty years.
The hardware and implement business was commenced by Jas. P. Dowell in a small frame building later used as Bill Miller’s machine shop. After a few years the business was moved to the old one story building, a cut of which is shown herewith.
In 1888 the handsome three story brick shown above was built and has since been the home of the firm and at which place Mr. Dowell conducted the business until his death in 1898, since which time the business has been under the management of his son, Avery Dowell. There are few retail concerns in Texas that can show an equal record of success and the firm of J. P. Dowell Co. now ranks among the leading hardware and furniture dealers in North Texas.

This building was built in 1888. The architect was J. E. Cooper. It was built in the commercial style. It is a three story brick building built in a rectangular plan. It has a flat built up tar roof. It has three-part Chicago window type openings on front with broad, single pane of glass and fixed, single-light windows on either side. It boasts a recessed entrance. The interior dates to 1922 with fixtures of that period.
This building housed the J P Dowell Hardware and Furniture store, which was established about 1877. The store was one of the oldest and most respected business firms in the City. A rare example of Commercial Style in a smaller Texas town (when it was built). To the south lies the Tin Shop and was originally detached from the store but in 1922 additions was integrated into the store.
The Dowell Tin Shop was behind the building.
