John Rufus Gamble was born near Pine Bluff, Arkansas on January 25, 1852. He came to Plano with his father in 1865. On January 25, 1875, he was married to Miss Mary Eliza Gamble in Denton County. The same year, they moved to Hamilton County, near Hico. Sometime between 1885 and 1886 the family began talking about moving to West Texas. They packed their few belongings and started on their westward journey with two wagon teams and three yoke of oxen....
On August 23, 1887, they landed three or four miles northwest of Thalia....
They bought 620 acres of land at $2.00 per acre in a community that would later bear the name, Gambleville. They drove 100 head of cattle from Hamilton County and did not lose one. The family lived in a half dugout and one room as most of the settlers did. ...
