Historical Marker Application
The Aston Building, located at 113 South Main Street, Farmersville, Collin County, Texas, at the East end of the Square, was built in 1888 by W. S. Aston on a portion of land conveyed to him and his brother, J. A. Aston, by Katherine Landon and her husband, Jimmie Landon, Jr., on August 25, 1879.
In order to divide the estate, there was a friendly suit in the family and on July 23, 1960, the Court awarded the subject property to W. S. Aston. It has remained in his possession, or his widow’s, unchanged in design, until purchased by the present Owners on October 10, 1978. [...]
The building was built for W. A. Aston by a contractor named Flynn, believed to have been a resident of Honey Grove. [...]
The property was owned by W. S. Aston from the time he built it until being awarded by court order to his son, Sam Aston, whose widow sold it to the present Owners.W. S. and J. A. Aston operated one of the early stores in Farmersville. In the 1880s W. S. Aston was a Director of the First National Bank, and in 1888 was on the Board of Advisors of the Looney-Dowlin Male and Female Academy in Farmersville.
Being a merchant, he evidently built the building for use as a place of business with his living quarters above. Being a prominent and influential citizen, he desired an outstanding and permanent building which resulted in the unusual and most attractive design and solid stone construction. [...]
The building was designed for a retail store in the first story and two apartments in the second.
Occupants of the first story were the store of Sam Aston, and later a buggy shop, shoe repair shop, bowling alley and several cafes. [...]
The first occupant of the second story was the original owner.
