Richard Howard
THE RICHARD HOWARD FAMILY
Biography.
William Howard and Elizabeth Marshall, daughter of Thomas Marshall, posted their bans, and were married on December 14, 1789, in Albemarle County, Virginia. To this union were born eight children, one of whom was Richard Howard, born May 13, 1801.
Richard Howard married Eliza Brown Pettit, the daughter of Ira and Nancy Pettit, in 1824. Eliza’s father gave the young couple a small Negro boy, David, as a wedding gift. Some time after they were married they lived on Thomas Jefferson’s plantation for three years while Richard worked as overseer.
In 1830 the young family which consisted of three children, James Sydney, Virginia, and Lucy Ann, migrated to Saline County, Missouri, in a one horse wagon. Eliza’s sister, Nancy Wortinbaken, went as far as Kentucky with them. After working for a Dr. Sappington for three years on his farm, Richard Howard bought two pieces of land from the Federal Government. The land was situated about 20 miles from Booneville, Missouri. To one patent President Van Buren’s signature was attached, and to the other President Buchanan. On this land the family erected a log house which had 3 rooms downstairs and one upstairs. During their stay in Missouri, Richard’s father died and Richard inherited 30 acres which he sold to his brother, Eli, for $215.25.
Ten additional children were born to the family in Missouri: William, Mary Ellen, Lucretia Jane, Margaret Damarious, Eliza, Sarah, Mildred, Ira Pettit, John Barnet, Lavinia, and Louisa.
The family came to Texas in the fall of 1857 in horse-drawn wagons, driving a large flock of sheep. They crossed Red River north of present Denison on a ferry. In Collin County Richard Howard bought 320 acres and another tract of 50 acres from Dickson M. Crutchfield and his wife, Susan, for $2,919. This land was seven miles northwest of McKinney and southwest of the Bloomdale Community. In the 1860 census it shows that he had land valued at $6,285, and personal property valued at $6000. The personal property included slaves, since the boy David had sons of his own who came with the family to Collin County. David took the name of Howard at the close of the Civil War and lived to be 98 years of age, dying in February of 1911. During the Civil War James William and Ira Howard served the Confederacy and returned home uninjured.
Richard Howard lived on his farm northwest of McKinney until his death on October 18, 1872 and was buried in the Scott Cemetery across the road from his land. His wife died in 1875 and is buried beside him.
Many of the Howard descendents still live in Collin County, particularly the descendents of James Sydney Howard, Ira P. Howard, John B. Howard, and Lucretia Howard McCorkle.
