ADDIE COUNTS HONORED
Newspaper, 1986.
Addie Counts celebrated her 103rd birthday on June 28 at the Pavilion Nursing Home, one of three parties that marked another year for the Home’s oldest resident.
She sat behind a decorated cake donated by Dr. Terry Mitchell and smiled as cameras clicked around her. Her friends at the nursing home joined Dr. Mitchell in singing “Happy Birthday” before feasting on cake and punch.
Addie was born in 1883, the oldest of nine children born to Mr. and Mrs. Lee Braswell. Her father was a farmer and her mother was a housewife in their home near Melissa.
Addie is the last of the four girls and five boys and has lived her whole life in the McKinney area.
She attended business school at Drawn’s Business College in Dallas, and worked as a court reporter for Judge Garnett from 1912 - 1917.
She was married in June, 1917 and had one child who lived in Bellville. She now has four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, with an eighth one due in October.
Her husband was a barber at the Cozy Barbershop downtown, and then at the VA Hospital. He worked until he was 81 years old and died in 1965. Addie has not let her advanced age stand in her way. She is still active and reads her Bible daily. She still wishes she could go home sometimes, but her presence would be missed among her friends.
They are all looking forward to an even bigger party next year.
