THE GEORGE FAMILY
Biography.
Lucas George, born in Virginia in 1805, was orphaned when both his father and mother died of cholera on their way to Tennessee to settle.
Lucas George grew up in Wilson County, Tennessee near Lebanon, where in 1840 he met and married Nancy Forbess (Forbes), born 1822 in Tennessee, the daughter of Tennessee pioneers, Arthur and Rachel (Carruth) Forbess. The young couple farmed in Tennessee until 1856 when they decided to move to Texas in a covered wagon. Other families came at the same time, Frank Dowell, Col. Ed Chambers, and others.
In 1858 Lucas George and wife Nancy bought a tract of land from Paschal H. and Martha H. Rice. The land lay northwest of McKinney in the Hackberry and what was later called the Vineland community. They were members of the Vineland Christian Church. They were the parents of eight children, seven children born in Tennessee. Later an eighth child was born in Collin County. Lucas George was remembered as the old man who rode an old grey mule, and led a sorrell to his wagon. He did not use lines to drive. He often went to market with eggs and butter to sell His motto was (buy what you can pay for, and no more.) Lucan and Nancy George died of typhoid fever only months apart. The year 1867 and are buried in a nearby cemetery called the Scott graveyard in unmarked graves.
Their children were Elizabeth Jane (Oct 3, 1842), Jeremiah W. (Feb 3, 1845), Permelia (Aug 12, 1847), Arthur Forbes (Jan 23, 1850), Thomas Alexander (Dec 9, 1851), Mary Rachel (Oct 5, 1855), and Cantrell Francis (June 24, 1861).
1. Elizabeth Jane married James E. Carruth. They are buried in Warden Cemetery. They were the parents of three children Charles Carlton, Theodosia, and Nola.
Charles C. (Callie) Carruth married first Margarette Warden – no family. Margarette died and is buried at Warden Cemetery. He married second Minnie Ann Helms and they were the parents of eight children: Merret, infant boy buried at Warden Cemetery, Jessie (buried Cottage Hill Cemetery), Levi, Lela (buried Cottage Hill), Georgia (2 year old infant buried Warden Cemetery), Nova Howell and Creek Carruth, both living in Weston.
2. Theodosia (Docia) Carruth married B. A. Comer, a Weston Druggist. Both deceased, buried Cottage Hill Cemetery. They were the parents of four children, Ella B.(died at birth, buried Warden Cemetery), Stella Comer Taylor, William (buried West Hill Cemetery, Sherman), and Agnes Comer Snelson.
3. Nola Carruth died single and is buried at Warden Cemetery.
2. Jeremiah W. George was a Confederate soldier, and drowned in East Fork Creek as he returned from a mission to Bonham. His body was recovered a month later by leder R. C. Horn. Burial place unknown.
3. John H. George married Sarah (Sallie) Ann Reed and made their home northwest of Weston. They were the parents of two children, neither of whom lived past youth. Viola George died an infant and James Albert George age 21 died as a result from internal injury from trying to lift a bale of cotton. They reared a nephew, James A. Reed, whose parents died when he was small. He married Susie McNew and was the parents of three children, Leland, Royce and J. W. Susie is buried in Van Alstyne Cemetery. The rest are buried in the Horn Cemetery.
4. Parmelia (Mead) George married Robert W. Weaver. Permelia is buried in Rania, Okla. Bob is buried in Durant, Okla. They had ten children, Annie E. Welch, Mary Jane Babb, William R., Ida Jenkins, George W., Eva Roark, Houston A., John, Jesse, and Margie May.
5. Arthur Forbes George married Mrs. America Hightower Carruth. They are buried in Brown County, Texas. They had two children, Vernon who married Ella Speck and Callie who married Milton A. Wells.
Vernon and Ella are buried in Brown County, Texas. They are 3 children, Spencer, Winnie and Floyd, all of Brownwood Texas.
Callie W. is buried in Beeville, Texas. Milton A. Wells is deceased. One girl, Eunice Wells living in Brownwood, Texas.
6.Thomas Alexander George married Frances Jane Reed and made his home northeast of Weston. Both deceased. They are buried in Horn Cemetery. They were the parents of three children.
1 Viola George (died age 6, buried in Horn Cemetery).
2 William Dennie George who married Rhonda H. Baker, of Weston. Both deceased. Buried in Van Alstyne Cemetery. They were the parents of 2 daughters, Mrs. Frank May Hix (deceased, buried in Van Alstyne Cemetery), and Mrs. Ruby George Flesher, who lived in Howe, Texas.
3. Mattie C. George married Willie J. Stephens.
7. Mary Rachel George married Joe Abb Alexander and made their home in Brown county.
Cantrell Francis George married Jennie Nixon and they were the parents of 6 children, Lula, Walter, Mary Nancy Pane, Allie F. Rucker, Roy Lucas George, Oscar George. After his wife’s death Cantrell Francis George married Martha Minerva Driver and they were the parents of 8 children, Eva Ethel Miller who lived in Van Alstyne, Abbie Crosswhite of Celina, Iva J. Miller of Van Alstyne, Tom R. George, Lawrence George now living in Dallas, Infant, Hattie May Cunningham living in Gunter, and Edgar George living near Celina.
Luke and Nancy both died of typhoid fever in 1867 and are buried in Scott Cemetery, location of graves unknown.
Lucas George has hundreds of descendents in Collin County and Texas.
