Capt. John K. Bumpass was born in Rocksboro, North Carolina, December 8, 1829 and migrated in 1857 to Collin County where he lived his life in the Farmersville area. During the Civil War he served in Company F, Fifth Texas, with Parson’s Rangers. he was offered promotions in rank but promised his men never to leave them. After the war he was a member of the State Constitutional Convention of 1865. He engaged in farming and stock raising, and was a member of the Democrat Conventions throughout his long life, canvassing the state, making speeches for all causes he believed in for 40 years. He was elected to 24th Legislature where he chaired several committees on public land, agriculture, and constitutional amendments. He married Elizabeth Thomas of Oak Hill, North Carolina and to them were born 12 children, Ida, Robert, Edwin, Modena, Verona, Nellie, Ninnie, who lived to be grown.
