WEST COLLIN CHURCHES THAT HAVE CONTRIBUTED TO FIRST CHRISTIAN CHURCH McKINNEY
Out on the western edge of Collin county just where the ridge county ends and the valley or Flats begins was a wonderful community. As far as eye could reach were fields of golden grain and tall corn. Farm houses with trees and flowers dotted this beautiful landscape. Every man owned his home and took pride in cultivating his land. It has been said of this community that all neighbors worked so well together there had never been a personal difficulty. In this community was built a school house (later a church) appropriately called Pleasant Ridge. Sometime in the 50's Alfred Douglas came to preach of Christ and his love, and talk of service and redemption. Many heard and believed. In 1881 a church was organized by R. C. Horn. The elders were Dr. Chew and S. H. Fox. Deacons John Barnes and J. W. Field. Every summer there was a series of meetings conducted by some of the best of our state evangelists; Marshall, Horn, Darnall, Gano, Douglas, Randolph Clark, and others.
As the children of this community grew many of their people moved to McKinney. They enriched and enlarged the citizenship of McKinney and strengthened both spiritually and financially the membership of the First Christian Church of McKinney. The men and women who came from this rich belt of our county brought with them those qualities that stand for real manhood and womanhood, and were a valuable asset to any town or community. I can’t mention each member but would mention Dr. Chew who meant so much as physician and friend and counselor to these people; and our beloved S. H. (Sam) Fox, whose life was an open book and whose last words to his brethren were to remain steadfast to the end. Others who cast their lot with the First Christian church of McKinney were: Dr. Chew and family, S. H. Fox and family, John Barnes and family, Jim Field and family, Billie Cox and family, Dick Collin and wife, Chas. Ware and family, Joe Ware and family, Wick Graves and family, D. C. Hill and family, Mrs. S. O. Scott, J. G. Barlow, Mrs. Laura Henderson and family, Mrs. J. D. Bass.
CORINTH CHURCH To the north of Pleasant Ridge was another community known as Corinth. Lying in the same belt of rich country and every man owned his home.
Sometime in 1878 or 1879 a church was organized by J. R. Darnall. He and his young wife came to Texas on their wedding trip just after the Civil war. At that time this part of the county was a grassy plain with great herds of cattle roving.
While not so many of these people came to the McKinney church yet those who did unite here have been of untold value. Mr. and Mrs. D. W. O’Brien, whose places are seldom vacant and to know they are absent is to know that they are sick. For years D. W. O’Brien was elder and superintendent of the Corinth Sunday School and his beloved wife has for many years taught a woman’s class in McKinney. Her knowledge of the Bible and faithfulness are an inspiration to all.
In this Corinth church was Dr. Moses Hubbard, prominent and devout man and physician. He and his wife gave in memory of their daughter, Alla Hubbard Spencer, the Alla school house and surrounding land to the children of the community. This daughter had many charms of mind and heart and wrote a number of beautiful poems which were published after her death. Other members were: Carl Darnall, Col. Of Medical Corps stationed at Hawaii. Moses Hubbard Darnall, physician in Washington, D. C., Eugene Holmes, pastor of First Christian church, San Marcos, Moses Hubbard, pastor Christian church, Enid, Okla. All went from this little church.
Those casting their lot with the McKinney church were: D. W. O’Brien and wife, Mrs. J. B. Darnall and daughter, Mrs. W. H. Love, Mrs. Willeth Love Chandler, Miss Kate Love, Mr. Oscar Brannon.
Preachers who held meetings at this church, J. R. Darnall, Randolph Clark, Ben Faulkner, Barnes, Bagby, Jim Wilmeth, Mac Wilmeth, McKnight, Alsup.
