Family of Adolphus Barbee Mayes
Adolphus Barbee Mayes came to Texas in 1852 with his parents, Dr. Robert B. Mayes who was one of Collin County's earliest physicians, and Nancy Barbee Mayes. The family came to Collin County from Green county, Kentucky and settled on Panther Creek, later known as Mayes Creek 4 miles northeast of present Frisco, Texas. The children who came to Collin with their parents were A. B., Willia,m, Berenice, Mrs. Margaret McWhorter, Mrs. William (Abbie) Allen, and Mrs. John Rhea ( Veronica). Mrs. and Mrs. John Rhea brought with them their two sons, John and Joe. John Rhea was killed in the Civil War and his wife later married T. J. Ferguson.
A. B. Mayes who was 8 years old when he came to Texas, served in the Confederate Army from 1861 to 1865, enlisting at old Mantua in September of 1861. He served with Company D. of the Texas Cavalry and of the 76 who formed the company only 26 came home at the close of the war. Both Dr. Robert B. Mayes and his son William died during the war.
Aldophus Barbee Mayes was married in Kentucky to Pernie Allen, sister of William Allen, State Senator from Texas. The couple settled in Collin County and farmed extensively.
Their children were Edgar E., Lillie who married Dr. J. C. Greer in 1887, James, Robert and Ida died in infancy. Their daughter Addie married Dr. I. E. Webb. Dr. Joe A. Mayes was a son also. A daughter Alva married T. A. Hartsfield. Mr. and Mrs. Mayes moved from the farm to Bradley Street in McKinney in 1886 and he operated Mayes and Porter Stock Feed Store. Mr. Mayes was a cattleman and large land owner.
There were 22 children, one of whom, Mrs. J. McCarty Dowell Sr., now lives in McKinney.
