COPE, LEVI
COPE, LEVI BAILEY
Letter.
I am positive my grandfather was born at Copeville in 1866 named Levi Bailey Cope, named for Joe Bailey, Texas governor. He was a plain dirt farmer, quite a drifter from place to place.... Levi had a brother who worked in a bank in Abilene, I am told, Miles C. Cope (1863-1941). They had 5 brothers and 2 sisters.
I saw large portraits of their father, John Mantler Cope and wife Rachel Smith. He was a fine looking man and could have been the high stepper in question. He was born in 1827 in Ill. died 1902 near Abilene....
I wrote to the court house at McKinney for the marriage record of these two, John M. Cope and Rachel Smith. They did not have it but had one for James Cope and Lucinda Smith 1854. Any kinship unknown to me, but they could have been brother and sister of the other couple.
A John Cope is listed among Texas Republic soldiers but I have not been able to pursue this as yet.
Levi had a sister Elizabeth Cope (1851-1902) whose husband was a preacher, Andrew Jackson Brummet. Their daughter named Birtie lived in McKinney.... Her married name was Abbot.
I wrote to Millard Cope of Marshall, Tex. He has passed away but the wife wrote a nice note saying Millard’s father’s name is James Anderson Cope born in 1874 and still living, is 90. His father in turn was Thomas Lewis Cope, died 1884.
As Rachel Smith Cope died at the age of 55 in 1889 I am thinking John M Cope remarried, but the name of the second wife is unknown to me.
