NORTH COLLIN PIONEER WOMAN CALLED TO REST
Mrs. Melinda Catherine Hendricks, 85 years old, died Sunday morning about noon at home of her son, W. L. Hendricks, five miles east of Anna. While her passing had been expected for some time, yet the death of this dear old pioneer woman causes wide-spread sorrow among hundreds of relatives and friends in this and other sections of the county and state.
Many Survivors.
Surviving are eight children, 72 grandchildren, 99 great-grandchildren and three great great-grandchildren.
During her illness Mrs. Hendricks had warded off death several times by her exceptionally strong constitution. Several months ago, when the home of one of her children, with whom she was staying, burned and grandmother was necessarily lifted and carried from he bed by one of the children, she withstood the excitement and strain with fortitude.
She was beloved by every friend and acquaintance. Much of her useful life was spent in rearing children of her brothers and sisters, whom she loved as her own. At the age of thirteen, she willingly accepted the responsibility of being mother to her young brothers and sisters, upon the death of their mother.
Born in Alabama.
Mrs. Hendricks was the daughter of the late W. M. Derrick and Cynthia Joplin of Alabama, who came to Texas in 1850, settling near Anna. Mrs. Hendricks was born in Alabama December 3, 1853, and was, therefore, 85 years, 4 months and 20 days of age.
Mrs. Hendricks was the wife of the late James Asbury Hendricks, who died in 1927. They were the parents of eleven parents, three of whom are deceased. The surviving children are Mrs. Tom Airhart, wife of Tom Airhart of Valdasta; W. L. Hendricks of near Anna; Mrs. Burrell Roper and Mrs Leeford Nichols of Anna; Mrs. Katie Long of McKinney, Cleve Hendricks and Wash Hendricks, farm owners, and Miss Hester Hendricks of Anna. The deceased was the grandmother of L. Dow Hendricks of McKinney, former County School Superintendent. She was a member of the Methodist church.
Funeral Services Monday.
Funeral services were held Monday afternoon in the Anna Baptist church at 3 o’clock, Rev. J. M. Harder of Ralls, West Texas, Rev. Walker, pastor of the Anna Methodist church, and Rev. C. S. Weaver, pastor of the First Christian Church of McKinney, conducted the services. The body was then conveyed to the Elm Grove cemetery for interment under direction of the Crouch Funeral Home.
