FORMER MAYOR OF McKINNEY DIES
McKinney–Joe E. Largent, 78, former McKinney mayor and long-time civic leader, died Friday at 6:40 p.m. at his home at 401 W. Virginia St. Mr. Largent had been in failing health for several weeks.
Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. in the First Christian Church, conducted by Dr. E. E. Russell. Burial will be in Pecan Grove Cemetery under direction of Crouch-Moore Funeral Home.
Mr. Largent was born in McKinney Nov. 8, 1884, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe E. Largent. He was Mayor from 1934 to 1938 and for 24 years was chairman of the Boyd Scholarship Fund Board. The fund enables worthy McKinney students to attend college.
For many years he was in the livestock business with the late Joe Barnes, but in recent years had been attending to his many farm and property interests.
He was a member of the First Christian Church and was an elder and member of the board of trustees.
Mr. Largent attended officers school at Camp Staley near San Antonio during World War I and was a member of the rationing board during World War II.
He was also a Mason and a former member of the board of the old McKinney First National Bank.
Survivors include his, Mrs. Pearl Sanders Largent; one sister Mrs. Joe F. Parks of Dallas and several nieces and nephews.
