DEAL - PETWAY - STRATTON
Biography taken from family history belonging to Petway family
These three families were landowners, one a merchant and all influential citizens of this part of Collin County [Lucas]. The history of these families goes back to Michael Koiner, born in Germany in 1720.
“Near the flow of the Danube River not far from the noble Rhine, Where the golden harvest quiver came a son of the Koiner line.”
That son was Michael Koiner who followed the lead of William Penn and came to the town of Philadelphia in the “New World” about 1740. He married Margaret Diller of New Holland, Pa. in 1749. The subject of this narrative, an ancestor of the late Mrs. J. N. Deal and her daughters, the late Mrs. W. P. Petway and the late Mrs. J. E. Stratton and their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren in Collin County, lived at a time when American was still in its primitive wilderness save on parts of its eastern border. Rebecca Koiner, born May, 1815, married Capt. George W. Deal of Missouri. The second of Capt. and Mrs. Deal’s children was John Newton Deal, who married Maggie Engleman, daughter of John Engleman and Elizabeth Koiner Engleman. Mr. and Mrs. John Engleman were great grandparents of the Petway men, Leroy and Fred of this area.
The history says “the John Englemans greatly prospered” in Collin Co., and at one time owned a thousand or more acres of land, much of which is within the city limits of Lucas. They gave each child a good farm. After Mr. and Mrs. J. N. Deal came to the Lucas area they sent their daughters, Virginia and Annie, back to Missouri to College. There Annie met James E. Stratton. He followed her back to Texas and they were married. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Stratton of Missouri. Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Stratton’s home, a large two-story building in the heart of Lucas still stands. For years he had a general merchandise store on the same lot, and had other business interests. They were the parents of three children: Elmer, Robert and Margaret. Elmer married Zelma Housewright of Wylie. They have one son, Elmer Jr. (Mann) who now lives in New York state. Margaret married Gene Biggs of Lucas. No children. Robert married Laverne Roper of Anna. To this union were born three sons and two daughters. Two of the sons, Bill and Wayne live in Allen.
W. D. Petway married Virginia Deal. They were the parents of four sons: Leo J., born March 1889, died Jan. 1969, Fred I., Eber G. and Leroy. Eber G. married Pauline Kerby. They had one child, Malcolm Leo - Dr. Malcolm Petway lived in Calif. Later Eber Petway married Bernice Boren. No children. They live in Farmersville. Fred I. Mr. and Mrs. John N. Deal were the parents of six children: Annie, Virginia, Ed, Will, John N. Jr. and Roy Deal. All grew up on the Deal farm in the Lucas area. Will Deal married Serilda Snider, daughter of Uncle Bud and Aunt Kate Snider of Lucas. John N. Deal Jr. married Annie Ruble of Parker area. Ed Deal married Minnie Fitzhugh of Forest Grove. The Fitzhugh family came to this area before the Civil War and one member of the family donated 10 acres of land - the original part of Fitzhugh Cemetery. Roy Deal married Myrtle Walker of this area. The Roy Deals lived on the homeplace here following his father’s death and continued to live here for a time after his mother’s death. They were the parents of two daughters and a son: Juanita, Dorothy and Walker Eugene. None of the family has lived in this area for years.
