PRESIDENT JOHNSON’S MOTHER WAS BORN IN McKINNEY IN 1881
Rebekah Baines, the mother of Lyndon Baines Johnson, 36th President of the United States, was born on June 26, 1881, in McKinney, Collin County, Texas. Her father was Joseph Wilson Baines who was born in Mt. Lebanon, Louisiana on January 4, 1846. When four years old, his father brought him to Texas. He attended Anderson Academy and Baylor University at Independence. His formal education was terminated by the Civil War. At the end of the Civil War, his father, Reverend G. W. Baines, was published of the old Texas Baptist, the first Baptist newspaper in Texas. In 1867, he began teaching school on Rowlett Creek in Collin County. On September 12, 1869, at McKinney, he married Miss Ruth Ament Huffman, daughter of Dr. John and Mary Huffman. The Huffman family were members of the Peter’s Colony. Joseph Wilson Baines studied law in the famous firm of Throckmorton & Brown of McKinney. He started his law practice in Plano. He later moved to McKinney where he was a successful attorney, land surveyor, abstractor, and in 1877 he established the McKinney Advocate, a widely read and influential democratic paper. In 1883, Joseph Baines and his wife with their two year old daughter, Rebekah, moved to Austin. During the four year Governorship of the Hon. John Ireland, he served as Secretary of State. In 1887 he moved to Blanco, then the County seat of Blanco County, where he developed an extensive and lucrative civil law practice as well as a substantial farming and ranching operation. On November 18, 1906, he died of a malignancy in Fredricksburg.
Rebekah Baines married Sam Early Johnson in August of 1907. On August 27, 1908, Lyndon Baines Johnson was born on the ranch of his grandfather at Stonewall, Texas.
