HAGGARD FAMILY
Family history.
The Haggard family originated in Denmark, migrated to England, then came to America. James Haggard who had been educated for the ministry came to America in 1698, landing at Norfolk, Virginia. Here he married and had 4 sons.
Nathaniel, son of James, (November 21, 1723) married Elizabeth Gentry and settled in Clark County, Kentucky in 1788 between Winchester and Boonesborough. They joined the Bush Settlement, which had been established in 1784 and became members of the Providence Baptist Church. They had seven sons and three daughters.
John Haggard, third son of Nathaniel and Elizabeth Gentry Haggard (April 7, 1754 - February 9, 1832) was born in Virginia and married Mary Shepard. They moved to Kentucky with his parents in 1788 and were the parents of eight children.
John Haggard, the third son of John and Mary Shepard Haggard, (March 17, 1794 - December 11, 1858) married Mourning Quisenberry and they became parents of 5 sons and 4 daughters. He was a planter and prominent in church affairs, being a member of the Unity Church.
Clinton Shepard Haggard, youngest son of John and Mourning Quisenberry Haggard (November 12, 1838 - June 30, 1930) was born in Winchester, Kentucky. His mother died when he was eight years old and when he was 18, he and his father came to Texas and settled on a section of land near Plano, and invested in stock, horses and mules. The father, John Haggard II, died December 11, 1858. September 1, 1859 Clinton S. married Nannie Kate Lunsford at the home of the bride’s mother, Mrs. Catherine Lunsford. The ceremony was read by Elder James Muse, pastor of McKinney Christian church. Nannie Kate was born in Oldham county, Kentucky, March 29, 1839. They became the parents of 9 children. One died in infancy and Clifton Haggard died in early manhood. When the Civil War began Clint Haggard joined Confederate forces and served in Company G, Alexander’s Regiment and later in the fall of 1863 he transferred to Captain Carpenter’s Company, Martin’s Regiment, Maxie’s Brigade, where he remained until the close of the war. After the war he returned to his home and became a successful landowner and stockman. In 1884 he bought more land and built a new colonial home two miles northwest of Plano. Among the close friends who were frequent visitors in their home were: Gen. R. M. Gano; Elder B. F. Wilson; Rev. A. J. Bush; Rev. R. C. Horn; Doctors Addison and Randolph Clark; the Bowmans; Jacksons; Bushes; Huffmans; Formans; Quisenberrys; Harringtons; Oglesbys; Barnetts; Aldridges; Shepards; Carpenters; Fletchers, and McElvains. The Clark brothers founded Add-Ran College, Thorpe Springs, Texas, where several of the Haggard children finished their education. This college was moved to Waco, Texas, and became Texas Christian University. In 1904 he gave each of his seven children 320 acres of land, or its equivalent, and retained farms in Collin, Dallas and Denton Counties. Both he and his wife were members of the Christian Church and contributed liberally to the church and church related universities and homes. In 1906 they endowed a self-perpetuating scholarship in Johnson Bible College, Kimberlin Heights, Tennessee; thus founding a system by which men may be educated for the Ministry. Both are buried in Restland Cemetery after having been moved from the old Bethany Cemetery.
1. Mary Catherine, eldest child of Clint and Nannie Kate Haggard (May 30, 1861 - March 26, 1943) married J. W. Shepard December 30, 1880 and they became parents of three sons and three daughters.
a. Bessie Shepard (March 31, 1884) married Leslie Shelton June 7, 1906. They had one son, Robert Leslie Shelton.
b. Theodore Shepard (August 5, 1884 - November 7, 1973) married Bernice Gale March 4, 1909. Two of their 3 children died young. Rogene was born August 13, 1915 and married Dr. Gerald Wagner. [One of the birth years of Bessie Shepard and Theodore Shepard has to be wrong.]
c. Emma Catherine was born May 8, 1888 and married Earl Barham of Oak Ridge, Louisiana June 22, 1917. They had four children, Shepard, R. E. Jr., Catherine and Theodore.
d. Mary Irene was born March 12, 1890 and married James Louis White June 24, 1913, divorce in 1926. Their two children were Mary Louise and Clinton Shepard who died at the age of 7 years.
e. J. W. Shepard, youngest child of J. W. and Mollie Shepard was born Feb. 1, 1897 and married Ann Lowry Eason of Lenoir City, Tennessee, July 17, 1919. J. W. Shepard was one time mayor of Terrell, Texas.
2. Nannie Elizabeth, daughter of Clint and Nannie Kate Haggard, (February 24, 1863 - November 15, 1954) married James Paxton Newsom of McKinney, November 2, 1882. They had one daughter, Lottie Kate (1885 - 1915).
a. Lottie Kate Newsom was born in McKinney, June 22, 1885. She graduated from Paris High School and attended the College of Industrial Arts, Denton, Texas. She and Homer Titus of Greenville, Texas, were married by Bro. Walker, Oct. 5, 1910, in the Christian church, San Angelo, Texas. Homer, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Al Titus, was born near Celeste, Texas. Lottie Kate died at her mother’s home in Sinton, Feb. 10, 1915, and is buried there.
After Mr. Newsom’s death, Nannie Haggard returned home and lived with her parents until she married Thomas Conner Bishop of Dallas December 31, 1891. He was a merchant in Hunt county, Texas, until 1900, when he moved to Paris and engaged in commission and brokerage business. He was formerly mayor of Paris, Texas, in the early 1900s, but later moved to Sinton, Texas, where he died October 5, 1912. Mrs. Nannie Haggard Bishop returned to Plano in 1916 and lived with her sister Mrs. Emma Haggard Bishop. To this union three children were born, Clinton Conner, Gladys Haggard, and Mary Elizabeth.
a. Clinton Conner Bishop (January 29, 1896 - December 27, 1972) was born at White Rock, Hunt County, Texas. After graduating from Sinton High School, he enlisted in the U. S. Army and spent one ½ years with an engineering corps in World War I. After the war he married Dora Marshall Witherspoon, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. L. Witherspoon, Dec. 12, 1923, in St. Mark’s Catherdral, San Antonio. They divorced in 1929. He was married July 5, 1931, in Houston to Mrs. Dorothy Lucille Greer, daughter of Charles Owen Taulbee and Lillian Miranda Johnson Taulbee. Connor adopted her son, William David. Later he married Norma Hess of Pittsburg, Texas.
b. Gladys Haggard Bishop (May 29, 1901) – second child of Nannie and Thom Bishop, was born at Paris, Texas. After graduating from Plano High School, she married Frederick Joseph Harrington October 8, 1919. Fred was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Harrington of Plano and was born Sept. 19, 1899. From the estate of his grandfather, Silas L. Harrington, he inherited farm land near Plano which included the original Col. Moss homestead. Their two sons were Joseph Hunter, born Aug. 6, 1921 in Plano, and Frederick Conner, born Jan. 7, 1925, who was elected Mayor of Plano in 1970. Gladys had the distinction of having the City of Plano name their new library the Gladys Harrington Library because of her many years of dedicated work in establishing a library for Plano.
c. Mary Elizabeth Bishop was born May 3, 1903, in Paris, Texas, and on January 16, 1923 was married to Edgar Howard Bush, son of Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Walker Bush. Their daughter, Nancy Lou Bush, born Aug. 29, 1924, is married to Tucker Frazer Morian.
3. John William Haggard (December 23, 1865 - August 30, 1937) married Hallie Fletcher November 18, 1885. Their six children were:
a. Clyde (January 20, 1890 - October 2, 1958) married Beatrice Daffron November 28, 1909. They were the parents of three daughters, Marguerite, Hallie Maude, and Quincy Pearl.
b. Clint (January 20, 1890 - September 5, 1967) married Quincy Scott December 1, 1915. Their son, Dr. Scott Haggard was born July 17, 1925.
c. Ray Haggard (July 10, 1893) married Jessie Dean November 11, 1920. Their son, John Yates is the fourth John Haggard in direct line from Nathaniel Haggard.
d. Jennie Jackson Haggard (December 17, 1896 - October 12, 1912).
e. Walter Dewey Haggard (September 14, 1898 - March 28, 1967) married Florrie Bowman September 21, 1921 and became the parents of two daughters, Fannie Mae Lott and Florrie Kate.
f. Martha Kate Haggard (July 2, 1907) married Edward Cullom Allen September 6, 1927. Their children are Annette and Mary Kate.
4. Jennie Lee Haggard, daughter of Clint and Nannie Kate Haggard, (July 19, 1868 - September 9, 1958) married George Albert Ray June 22, 1892 and became the parents of Haggard, Mary Katherine, Romayne, George Jr. and Dorothy.
a. Clint Haggard Ray (August 4, 1895) married Monna Bates, June 28, 1922.
b. Mary Katherine Ray (November 29, 1896) married Dr. S. F. Harrington May 10, 1921. Their children are Dr. Ray Harrington and Mary Katherine (Kay) Harrington.
c. Romayne born September 12, 1900, died September 12, 1941.
d. George Albert Ray (August 27, 1903 - September 1972) married Paulyn Gardner and they adopted a son, Trace.
e. Dorothy Ray (September 17, 1909) married Lillard Lewis of Washington D. C. November 14, 1931. Their children are Millard Lewis, Jr., George Ray, and Dorothy (Susie) Lewis.
5. Emma Frances Haggard, daughter of Clint and Nannie Kate Haggard was born September 15, 1870. She married William Preston Bishop August 11, 1896 and after his death in 1901 she returned to her parent’s home in Plano to live.
6. Annie Belle Haggard, daughter of Clint and Nannie Kate Haggard, (June 6, 1873 - September 5, 1969) married James Shelton Aldridge November 15, 1893. Their children are Minnie Lee, Katherine, James Clinton, and Emma Ruth.
a. Minnie Lee born Aug 28, 1895, married James Beall of Sweetwater, Texas, Aug 15. 1918. Their son is Dr. James Beall, dentist.
b. Katherine was born Oct. 29, 1897 and married Joseph Evans Feb. 24, 1920. They are parents to two sons, Dr. Joseph Evans, dentist and Pat Evans.
c. Jim was born Apr. 23, 1901 and died May 26, 1959. He married Bessie Mae Purity? Nov. 11, 1927.
d. Emma Ruth was born July 17, 1905 and married Chapley Ross Kendricks of Winters, Texas Feb. 24, 1927. Their children are James Stuart, Marianne and Janet.
7. Walter Owen Haggard, youngest son of Clint and Nannie Kate Haggard (March 9, 1880 - May 8, 1956) married Rosa Rice March 8, 1905. Their children are Clifton, Irene, Clint Shepard, Emajean, and Walter Owen Jr.
a. Clifton was born June 13, 1907 and married Louise Rutledge Aug. 4, 1933. Their children are Rutledge, Linda and Owen.
b. Irene was born Oct. 1, 1911 and married June 9, 1929 to Floyd Bedell. They are parents of Floyd, Jr., Walter and Carolyn.
c. Clint Shepard was born Oct. 11, 1914 and died Mar. 5, 1916.
d. Emajean was born Feb. 9, 1917 and married June 19, 1940 to Johnny Hall. Their son is Michael Hall.
e. Walter Owen, born Nov. 28, 1925, married Aug. 2, 1947 to Ann Merle Mayo. Their children are Rodney Owen and Janna Sue.
Members of this Haggard family who have been prominent in religious, social and business affairs through the years, are still living in Collin County. They are Gladys Harrington and Elizabeth Bush, daughters of Nannie Haggard Bishop; Ray Haggard, son of John Haggard and his grandchildren, John Yates, Marguerite, Quincy Pearl and Fannie Mae Haggard; Katie Evans, daughter of Annie Belle Haggard Aldridge and her grandson Pat Evans; Clifton Haggard, Imogene Hall and W. O. Jr.; children of Walter Haggard, his grandson, Rutledge Haggard.
