PIONEER AND HIGHLY ESTEEMED CITIZEN– CAME HERE IN 1847
PASSED AWAY THIS MORNING
BORN IN KENTUCKY APRIL 22ND 1818– AGED WIFE AND THEN CHILDREN SURVIVE.
Monday morning at 7:07 o’clock after a lingering illness due to old age, Uncle George Herndon, one of the county’s earliest pioneers and most highly respected citizens peacefully passed away at his residence in this city. The devoted wife of his bosom for nearly sixty years, several children and a few near friends were at the bedside when the end came.
The deceased was born Feb. 22nd, 1818, in Madison county, Ky., and was therefore 84 years 7 months old when he died. When a mere lad he moved with his parents to Cooper county, Mo., near the town of Boonville where he lived until about the age of 20 when he moved to Arkansas and embarked in the stock raising and farming business. Here he married Miss Cynthia A. McGarrah April 6, 1843. The wedding took place at Fayetteville that state, where he resided 4 years before moving to Texas. He moved to Texas in 1847, but had twice visited the state prior to that time – once in 1842, on his way to Mexico and later on a trading expedition. After moving to Texas in 1847, he lived a year with his wife’s father, Capt. Jack McGarrah, who laid out the village of old Buckner 3 miles west of McKinney in 1845, a year before the county was organized and which became the first county seat of Collin county.
After fighting indians about a year, he headwrighted 640 acres now known as the Willis Dowell farm, 6 miles west of McKinney. For about ten years they made their home there and then moved to the present old homestead 9 miles west of McKinney which they still own. In 1886 he moved to the Logan farm 3 ½ miles southwest of town and thence to their home in McKinney in 1890 where he died. Fifteen children, ten of whom are living, were born to Mr. and Mrs. Herndon as follows: Henry C. of Mineral Wells; Thomas J, single and living with his parents; Jas. R. of McKinney; Albert H., died at the age of 12; Ben Z., of McKinney; Mary E., wife of J. C. Montgomery, of McKinney; Lucy J., wife of H. E. Singleton, of near McKinney; Julia A., wife of H. C. Addison, of Mt. Park, Okla; Cynthia A., died in infancy; George A., somewhere in Montana, address not known, Sallie F., deceased, first wife of G J. Barlow; Wm. Herndon, deceased; Mrs. Mattie F. Field, of Rock Hill; C. E. (Ed) of Douglas, Ariz.; Laura A., who died at age of 15. One sister, Mrs. Julia A. Fenwick, aged 80 of Herndon, Saline county, Mo., also survives. Capt. E. R. Stiff and the late Dr. G. A. Foote were his brothers-in-law. The late James Herndon, pioneer who settled 3 miles west of McKinney, Mrs. Chas. Fox, deceased, mother of S. H. Fox, were brother and sister of the deceased.
From a population of scarcely over 100, when he first came, Uncle George, as he was familiarly called, lived to see a populous county of nearly 60,000 emerge from the wilderness.
