NORA ELIZABETH CARTER
Letter, 1987.
[My mother] was born Nora Elizabeth Carter on 23 July 1905 in McKinney....
Her parents were William L. Carter and Fannie Lou Pope. They married in McKinney on 10 May 1904, by a Baptist minister, I believe. ... Fannie Lou’s wedding dress is quite elaborate & family tradition says she made it – in fact was a milliner & dress maker in McKinney.
I do not know when William L. Carter moved to McKinney except that it was past 7 June 1900. On that date he is enumerated in the 1900 census Arkansas with his parents and sisters. He was a farmer most of his life and probably was so employed in Collin County. By 1910 or thereabouts he apparently moved from Texas....
Fannie Lou Pope Carter was born in Murfreesboro, Rutherford County, TN on 3 May 1885 to Ezell & Lenora (also called Eleanor & Norah) Pope. The family moved to Collin County sometime between Oct 1888 when their youngest daughter was born in Tennessee and 14 June 1900. They appear in the 1900 census for Texas Vol 20, #ED 1, Sheet 13, line 79 as family #229....
Ezell Pope apparently rented the farm he was working, in Precinct 1 ..., and appearing on the farm schedule as farm #147. All three of the daughters Fannie Lou, Maggie Florence, and Alla May, are listed as “at school.” Their ages are 15, 13, & 11 respectively. ...
Mother said that Lenora Pope moved to Oklahoma after Ezell’s death “in the field” in the McKinney area. We don’t know when that was but Lenora died in Oklahoma when mother was ‘about 5' so it would seem he died pre-1910....
In case it will help identify the rest of the family there were four boys - Oscar Lee, Fountain, Robert L. & Clinton, ages 23, 22, 19, & 17 respectively in 1900.
1858 William Carter - m. Jemima J. France Vol 2, p 301
1867 Wm. Carter - m. Almira Routh Vol. 3, 103
1876 Wm. T. Carter - m. Mary E. Cunningham Vol. 4, 52
1902 W. L. Carter & Fannie Pope Vol. 13, p 463 May 14, 1904
