GODWIN, JOSEPH WELLS
Biography.
Joseph Wells Godwin was born in Pigeon Creek, Butler County, Alabama, on October 10, 1872. His parents were John Albert Godwin and Catherine Miles Lynn. His grandfather was Wells Godwin. His family moved to Texas about 1875 along with his maternal grandparents, Newton B. Lynn and Sarah Emilene Dickens Lynn. They settled in Erath county first, but were in Collin County near Lucas by 1878.
Joseph married Minnie Frances Reed in 1895.They lived in the Princeton area where he was a farmer. In 1902 he and several other men purchased the Princeton Mill and Gin Company.
Minnie Frances Reed was born December 39, 1879 in Collin County. She and Joe had 14 children. Her father David Benton Reed was born in Jackson County, Missouri. He came to Texas about 1860 and settled in Ellis County. Her mother was Louisa Josephine Herring, daughter of Isaac and Nicey Herring of Murphy. The Herrings came to Collin County from Greene County, Illinois, in 1846.
Joseph died January 1, 1962. Minnie died April 5, 1966. Both are buried in the Princeton IOOF Cemetery, along with his parents and maternal grandparents.
