DOWELL FAMILY
Biography.
Nehemiah Dowell, (1767-1842), was one of the very early settlers of Virginia who made their way over the mountains to Tennessee when the state was very young. The exact date of the trip is not recorded, but a study of the early settlement of Alexandria and Liberty in DeKalb County shows that they were settled in 1795 and 1797. There was also a settlement at Brush Creek, Tennessee early enough for Cantrell Bethel of Liberty to constitute a Baptist Church May 2, 1802.
The descendents of Nehemiah Dowell and his wife, Elizabeth Deering Anderson were John, William, James, Elias, Mary, Elisha, Willis, Presley, Francis and Robert. Francis Dowell married Caroline Doss and they were the parents of J. P. Dowell.
Francis Dowell, father of James P. Dowell, married Carolina Doss. He came to Texas in 1865 from Lebanon, Tennessee. He migrated at an early age to Tennessee from Virginia, Forquer County and originally settler close to the city of Dallas, later moving to McKinney. On March 20, 1868 [James P.] was married to Ida Sparks and to this union were born the following children, Cora, Francis, Lina, James Wallace, Allie, William Avery, Edward S., Clare, James P., Ida, and Clifton Dowell.
James P. Dowell born December 8, 1846, died 1898.
James and his wife spent the first two years of their married life in the big farm house of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Francis Dowell. When they moved to McKinney Mr. Dowell entered the farm implement business on North Kentucky Street about 1875 and built the J. P. Dowell Hardware Building. When J. P. Dowell died his four sons, Avery, Ed, Jim and Clifton carried on the business until 1945 when it sold to Luther Cadenhead.
