The small town of Weston is one of Collin County’s oldest communities.
In 1880 Weston School was said to be one of the best school communities in the county, good land, good society. The teacher, W. S. Saunders, had made a reputation in the last two years at this place as an educator, keeping pace with the age. In 1890 Weston had 50 students and 111 in 1891. T. H. Stamps and W. H. Culwell were the teachers in 1901. In 1905 the teachers were J. B. Culwell and Miss Mattie Addison.
In 1909 Weston had 36 males and 46 females. It had 138 students in 1912.
The County School Superintendent In 1918 said: “The Weston District has voted a 50¢ tax and bonds to the amount of $3000. The contract has been let for the new house but it will not be equipped or the present school, but will be fully ready before the first of September. This new house will be one story with three rooms. The new house will be the pride of the Weston district. When the new equipment is ready, I am expecting the Weston school to forge to the front. It was feared for some time that his district would fail to get a portion of the State aid but I have just lately been assured that the aid would be given. This will mean two months more school. This last two months will begin March 19. Mr. Malone, the first principal of this school, died at his home in Weston during the early part of the year. M. M. Dunn took his place and taught until the State and county funds were exhausted. School was then suspended for two weeks pending the arrangements for State Aid. S. C. Steven will serve as principal during the remainder of the school. Mrs. T. J. Taylor and Mrs. Lizzie Mitchell are the assistant teachers.”
In 1925 the school had 123 students.
The Weston School at one time had four teachers. In the 1950’s, two of those teachers were Mrs. Ponder and Mrs. Billups, with Mr. Earl Tennison as principal.
After the nearby country school of Lone Star closed down in the 1950’s, that Lone Star School building was moved into Weston. It was attached to the Weston School building on the left-hand side and used as the lunch room for students there.
By the 1960’s, as schools consolidated and many closed, in the Weston School, grades 1 through 6 were taught. It became a 1-teacher school, with a total of 23 students enrolled. Mrs. Gerald Giles taught all subjects to all students, just as had been done with the Lone Star School, in past years.
The school building was a square, white building, with many large windows, six in the front of the building alone.
There was ample space to the side and in back of the building for many games of ball, Red Rover, and other games played there, to run off excess energy at recess.
There was a small auditorium, with a stage at the front. Many plays were performed over the years and many poems were memorized and recited. Events were entertainment for other students and parents, who came for a “night out”, to appreciate what their children were learning and involved in.
The school building still stands. However, it has been converted to a business. It only stands now as a monument to days gone by and memories for its former students. Elementary School, grades first - fourth, building currently being used for a business.
