The West Ward School was built in 1953 on Hill Street at Graves Street in McKinney. Later the school was renamed for Nell Burks who taught school in McKinney for 43 years. She originally taught second grade at Central Ward Elementary and then at West Ward when it opened in 1953. She remained at West Ward until her retirement in 1960. West Ward is now named Nell Burks Elementary. Burks Elementary School is still utilized in 2020.
